How the project was born

How the project was born

  • As an immigrant mother living in Alicante, Spain, I struggled to find engaging playgrounds for my children. The search for good playgrounds was a frustrating experience: Google Maps had outdated information, scarce pictures, and unhelpful comments. This situation made difficult to plan family outings, leaving me feeling unsupported in a new city.

  • Determined to solve this problem not only for myself but for other parents facing similar challenges, I embarked on a mission to create a comprehensive and user-friendly web-app to make finding playgrounds in Alicante easy and enjoyable.

Problem

Problem

  • Parents cannot easily find outdoor or indoor playgrounds in Alicante because the only source they have is Google Maps, which does not always have updated information or pictures.

  • Many of Alicante’s older playgrounds are derelict, with some having broken equipment or no equipment at all.

  • There is no promotion of playgrounds from the government to encourage families to have healthier lives.

Solution

Solution

  • Making a web-app with an interactive map enables users to easily find and filter playgrounds by the family’s needs, children’s age, distance and amenities.

  • Parents will be able to post comments and upload pictures on Alicante Let’s Play! By sharing them on social media, parents could enable the government to notice their findings and take action when needed.

  • Helping families to find playgrounds would promote a healthier lifestyle.

Discovery Phase

Discovery Phase

I wanted to learn more about what parents do when they want to take their kids to play. I asked them how they find information about playgrounds and how often they go. This helped me see what problems they face and what they need when looking for play areas for their children.

To get this information, I made an online survey and talked to parents in person. The survey had both multiple-choice questions and space for parents to write their thoughts.

What I found

What I found

  • Frequent Visits: Most parents (93%) often take their kids to playgrounds. Many go several times a week (60%).

  • How They Find Playgrounds: Parents mostly use Google (40%) or ask other parents (31%).

  • Willing to Help: Many parents (80%) are happy to leave reviews and photos to help others.

  • Need for an App: Most parents (88%) would welcome an app to find playgrounds.

The survey showed that parents feel that currently there is not an easy way to find updated playground information. Since so many parents are willing to share their experiences, I decided to make a web-app where they can just do that. This information helped me figure out the features users wanted in the web-app.

Takeaways

  • Research: I created personas, researched indirect and direct competitors and did a survey which helped me in the discovery stage of this project. I was able to empathize with the users, by identifying their painpoints, feelings and needs. It made me realize how resourceful a deep investigation can be and how it could help to make everything smoother.

  • Wireframing: Sketching the website’s sections allowed me to communicate ideas in a clear way. I realized early on that this step is for making mistakes and learning about what you want to convey.

  • UI and prototyping: I learnt Figma‘s basics first and then some advanced features. Creating reusable components and playing with prototyping made me fall in love with the process and motivated me to continue experimenting and learning the tool.

  • Usability: I ran tests for contrasting colours and typography. I think users and its capacities should be taken seriously.
